Best way to set up multiple hard drives for archiving?
I have a bunch of unused hard drives (six or seven), ranging from 40 to 200 GBs sitting around. I wanna put them to use, mostly for backup and archiving.
I have a few unused Dell Inspirons lying around, but they only take two drives and, ideally, I’d prefer having one machine. I don’t want to buy a huge server either. Is there a way to set up a simple data server?
What you may be interested in is a new server from Microsoft called Home Server 2008.
It comes with 10 CAL(client Access Licenses) and will all you want.
As far as putting a lot of junk parts together to make a storage unit, if you are not going to use Server software, you are asking for more down line trouble then you care to thinks about.
With a server you can span the partitions of all the drive and combine them into one volume.
